Movie Previews-Hairspray, Sunshine, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane

Posted in Movies at 4:11 pm by earl

Hairspray-Okay, I know it’s no Transformers, but this movie which started as a play which I saw performed by a school group at a convention looks to be a rare gem. It tells the story of a girl in the 1950s whose dream it is to be on a popular TV show. It has a long list of very funny people including John Travolta, Christopher Walken, and Queen Latifa. I wanna be called King…..or maybe Jester…..on second thought-

Sunshine-This cool little sci-fi thriller is set in the future when the sun basically runs outta fuel and a couple of brave souls are going a mission to reignite the sun. It looks to have some pretty cool special effects, and a unique storyline. That’s a good combination. Yep. I just used the word “yep” so I could go onto the next line. I’m so clever. Just like this movie! Ha ha ha. Oh…..

All The Boys Love Mandy Lane-This movie tells the story that most of us are too familiar with. Mandy Lane, the prettiest, coolest, most popular girl in school has all the boys affection, but there’s one boy that’s doing all he can get to her. Including eliminating his competition. I take back that familiarity part. It’s like High School Musical gone horribly wrong! (I’m sorry, I had to tell that one!) I’m so clever…LIKE SUNSHINE!

Movie Previews-Harry Potter, Captivity, Talk to Me

Posted in Movies at 1:00 pm by earl

Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix-Harry Potter is back again in the third Harry Potter film, and this time Voldemort is doing something, there’s a pretty cool broomride, and there’s a new organization called the Order of the Pheonix. The movie looks promising, but I think J.K. Rowling should have done away with the wands and instead, use the magic like Force lightning.

Captivity-This Saw-like movie has two people chained together in someone’s basement, and they’re trying to escape. This movie sounds a lot like Saw. Hmmm…..That’s all I got for this movie that sounds like Saw. Did I mention that this movie sounds like Saw?

Talk To Me-This movie follows Don Cheadle as he plays a radio-show talk host during the turmoil in the 60s. This movie actually looks pretty proising in a flood of actio flicks. A rare gem in the diamond mine of summer… A…Oh forget it…

Evan Almighty

Posted in Movies at 12:45 pm by earl

(Grade:A-) This one was definitely better than the first. It tells the story of Evan Baxter in his new job of Congressman trying to follow God’s instructions of building an ark. Steve Carell does a pretty good job, not including a few moments. Morgan Freeman once again does a great job of playing God. The whole movie flows along smoothly, but there was only one problem I had with it. It didn’t quite follow the Bible all the way through. There were two doors of Evan’s Ark, and they closed it. They let other people on the ark, and rain didn’t cause the flood. One thing I loved about it however, was it’s family-friendiness, something not found in Bruce Almighty. Overall, this is a really fun movie for the summer.

Transformers

Posted in Movies at 9:04 am by earl

Before I start this review I must set one of my pet peeves out on the line. The person sitting to the left of me two seats over from me was a hyena…a pottymouthed hyena. I can understand if you’re enjoying the movie, but if it sounds like you’re trying to pass a kidney stone and you’re saying the “s word” and “ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” as much as someone who is passing one, you need to, as Dr. Evil said, “Take it down a notch.”.

(Grade:A+) You know how people come out of a movie saying what the most awesome part is? Well, there are so many, that I can’t pick one. The story follows the Autobots and Decepticons coming to Earth to find the All Spark, an energy source to save their planet. The special effects are just plain gorgeous, and the battle scenes are epic, long enough, and variative, my favorite being the scorponok battle in Qatar. The voice acting is also very cool, and the performances by Shia Lebouf, John Turturro, and Megan Fox are great.
And I am definitely looking forward to a sequel with it showing Starscream getting away in the credits. This movie could also not just be called an action, but it’s a comedy. Anderson and his “cousin” provide a hillarious performance, and so do Bernie Mac, Shia, and even the Transformers. Overall, if you see this movie and do not enjoy it, you really need to consider what things you do enjoy.

Movie Previews-Transformers, License to Wed, Rescue Dawn

Posted in Movies at 10:29 am by earl

Transformers-More than meets the eye! One of the movies I am most looking forward to this year, Transformers will tell the story of two robot factions, the Autobots and Decepticons, coming to Earth to find an energy source for their planet. Wooooooo! Words cannot describe how awesome   this movie looks! Thank you Fandango! Now those puppets can stop patronizing me!

License to Wed-Robin Williams is coming back on screen with his new comedy. The very funny John Krasinski and Mandy Moore are a couple determined to get married, but before they can do that, they have to go through Reverend Frank. But will they be able to get through it and live happily ever after? We’ll just have to wait and see. I myself will too busy obsessing over Transformers. Let’s just hope this movie gem doesn’t get lost in the shuffle.

Rescue Dawn-Former Batman Christian Bale is starring in the new movie about the true story of an American pilot who was shot down in Vietnam and captured by Vietcong Guerillas. He was and is my favorite Batman so let’s hope he does just as well in this role opening Wednesday in limited release.

You may be wondering, “Earl, why are you so excited about Transformers?” Well, it’s because I’m a guy, and most of us like big things, transforming, and shooting other big things. Another reason is that I have Fandangoed my tickets and plan on seeing the first showing at my local theater!

Deja Vu

Posted in Movies at 2:50 pm by earl

(Grade:A-)  This was actually a pretty good movie. It follows an officer (Denzel Washington) who is on the case with a high-tech team that has found a way to watch the past events in order to stop a crime that has already happened. Denzel’s acting is pretty good, although not as good as in John Q.  Warning:The first 30 minutes, despite an awesome explosion, are some of the slowest in movie history, but the next 90 are both interesting and action packed. Overall, this isn’t a bad renter for Friday night.

Ocean’s Thirteen

Posted in Movies at 8:15 am by earl

(Grade:A-) This being my first Ocean’s movie, I really enjoyed it. This was a really funny movie that had me laughing several times. The boys are trying to take down Willy Banks, a cruel casino owner who hurt one of their own. This is a great movie just to take a couple of friends to go see with, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to have a good time. This is a breath of fresh air and originality in a midst of plain ol’ action movies.

Movie Previews-Ratatouille, Live Free or Die Hard, Sicko

Posted in Movies at 2:00 pm by earl

This is a series I’m planning on doing on Mondays, but our blogs were down yesterday so I’ll do it today for this week. In this series I’ll preview the movies coming out this upcoming weekend. Enjoy.

Ratatouille-All Remy wants to do is become a chef, but there’s one tiny problem…he’s a rat. But with the help of his human friend who’s struggling in the kitchen they could possibly become the greatest chef in Paris! I was a fan of Cars and many other Pixar movies, and thanks to the wonderful voice acting by Patton Oswalt, I think Pixar is going to work it’s magic again with this one.

Live Free of Die Hard-What really is there to say about this movie? Officer Joh Mclaine (with the help of “The Mac Guy”) are off to save the world from terrorists and to save Mclaine’s daughter who has been kidnapped. Really, who needs a plot when you have crazy explosions, Mythbuster moments, and a helicopter being taken out by a car.

Sicko-This is another documentary behind the man Micheal Moore. In this little tale, we’re taking our minds off Al Gore’s little dream of the world flooding and focusing on people and their healthcare system. Since this is the man who made the highest-grossing documentary of all time, I think we can expect this one to throw some serious punches.

Ghost Rider

Posted in Movies at 1:46 pm by earl

(Grade: B) This movie was actually pretty good, although it’s not like Spiderman that blows your socks off, you know. In this Marvel adaptation it tells the story of a man named Johny Blaze, who, as a teen, sold his soul to the devil so that his father could live. But now as an adult, he must now work for satan as his “Ghost Rider”. Nicholas Cage does a pretty good job of acting, especially in his transformation scenes, and I must say bravo to the actor who played the old Ghost Rider, awesome job. Overall, this one may not go down in my favorites like Spiderman and the Fantastic Four, but for a character that doesn’t really appeal to everyone, they did a pretty good job.

Fantastic Four Series

Posted in Movies at 6:51 pm by earl

Fantastic Four-(Grade: A-) This one was definitely my favorite of the two. Basically, five people on a spaceship get bombarded with Gamma rays and thus, get superpowers. Dr. Doom was very cool in this movie, and so were the other four characters. Despite what other critics say, this one was the best.

Fantastic Four:Rise of the Silver Surfer-(Grade:B) At first I was a little hard on this one, and it was probably because I wasn’t really anticipating it or paying as much attention as with Spiderman 3. This movie was pretty good. Through the movie they are tracking down the Silver Surfer and trying to stop him, Galactus, and Dr. Doom. The action seqeunces are very good, and so are the special effects. Overall this is a pretty decent superhero movie.

Happy Feet

Posted in Movies at 1:05 pm by earl

(Grade:B+) This movie was pretty good. It reminded me a lot of an educational movie that’s trying to save the environment. Not that that’s a bad thing. I just wish they would have just came out and said it. Other than that, this movie is pretty funny, mostly because of Robin Williams. I recommend this to anyone who wants to have a good laugh.
