Old to New School Video Games
Â
     Â
As we all know, there are several new video games that are coming out that are spreading out brand new series, and will possibly last for years to come. But what about old school games like Mario and Sonic? Can they still survive in a new enviroment full of shiny graphics, gameplay innovations, and the soon to be beaten Blu-ray? Or will they just eat the dust like Sonic has and be only remembered as a distinct memory that will never receive an update? And if so, which of our newer series will meet that fate, and when?
Well, the Way I see it, there are a couple of different answers. Back in the 80s we received Mario, the Italian plumber who was rescuing Peach from the cruel hands of Bowser over and over again. And just about 5 months ago we received his newest installment, Super Paper Mario, which was a huge success. And we planning on getting another one in November. So we could definitely say that Mario, the old-school king, is still reigning on his throne. And he’s not the only one. Old-school superstars like Metroid, Zelda, and more are still kicking butt after 20 years! However, some characters fail to meet that expectation, like Sonic. Before you Sonic Fans (Steven and The Dirty Kid) fly off the handle, take a look at these scores of the last few Sonic games since its last good game, Sonic Adventure Battle 2. Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)-2 out of 5, Shadow the Hedgehog-2 out of 5/ 1 out of 5/ Worst Game of the Year, not to mention all the other games that were even worse than Larry the Cably Guy:Health Inspector. Sure, Sonic has had some good games, but with 50 good games and only about 15 being good, YOU HAVE A PROBLEM. Overall, when it comes to if old school games will live or die, it’s all a matter of content. One reason Sonic games fail is because of their new, trying to be hip content, which fails miserably, one reason we loved the original was because it was just fun to run and attack Eggman. We don;t really care about the emo-style whinings of Shadow. And series like Metroid which have new content and yet succeed do that because the new content is actually worthwhile. If you decide to add new content, do it right.

exactly! I wish they made sonic games like they used to…
Mario, Zelda and Metroid will probably always be making new games (at least I hope they do!) NINTENDO ROCKS!!!
The thing is, earl, I have a hared time finding fun games out of all these shiny new series. Remember, I don’t play M rated games at all. (and rarely games with cussing or blood)
The thing that bugs me is that the game industry is letting this new technoology fet to their heads. I miss the good old days of gaming that I am too young to really remember. I miss when point and click games ruled the world. And games were not so bloody!
…And you know who you were then. Girls were girls and men were men.
Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.
People seemed to be content. Fifty dollars paid the rent.
Freaks were in a circus tent. Those were the days…
And for 483 bounus points, who can tell me what that is the theme song to?

Well, if I am the Dirty Kid, you must be the Nerdy Kid!

Well, since you’re leaving a comment at 11:00 at night, you must be the lonely kid when nothing better to do. (Including sleep)
Seriously, you should probably try to think if there’s a woman that you met in a crowd and then track her down to realize that she has your deceased wife’s eyes!
Really, the reason I put that was
A. You change your name/site every………second.
B. It’s funny. Take a joke.

Seriously, you could set your watch by it. (I got that from Colt)

Back on topic, I agree James, good, wholesome games like Metroid, Zelda, and Mario are hard to come by. It is somewhat often that you do see a good game with profanity and blood, but those weigh it down in my book. For instance, Destroy All Humans 2, one of my favorite games ever, had several profanities and sexual innuendo. Really I would recommend games like Katamari Damacy which will probably be coming out for the Wii soon, Okami poss. for the Wii, The Warioware series, and there are dozens more.
Herbert Hoover’s reelection campaign?

All In the Family!!! DUH!
Oh BTW, Sonic Riders was pretty fun.
Oh, and Sonic Heros Scores on gamespot:
GC - 7.5
PS2 - 6.2
XBox - 7.0
I suppose it depends some on the version. I liked it but it was a dissapointment. (Sonic games should be MUCH MUCH better)

You have a point Steven and James, Sonic has had some good games in the past, but it’s just the change and the unmet expectations that keep in lower than the greats like Mario and Samus, who you’d have to look really hard to find a bad game on. Also, Sonic’s bad games aren’t just bad, they’re atrocious. Shadow the Hedgehog was the Worst Game of the YEar when it came out, and Sonic the Hedgehog was bomb-worthy all the way to the end. You’ll ntoice Sonic’s games where he tends to stay with his original roots are the real winners.

Sonic could just be so much better, and that’s why I mentioned that he hasn’t transitioned well.
